Large photo attachments to emails and messages might put strain on the recipient’s device as well as the app. In addition, there are size restrictions on the photos you can submit on a lot of social networking and website platforms.

Using a Compression App

This is the easiest and most effective way to reduce photo sizes. I recommend either the Photo Compress or Compress Photos & Pictures apps available for free from the App Store.

Photo Compress App

1. Download and open the Photo Compress app
2. Tap on the + icon in the bottom right and select photos to compress from your iPhone storage or cloud services like iCloud. You can select single or multiple photos.
3. Once photos are selected, tap “Done” in the top right.
4. You will now see sliders to control the “Image Quality” and “Size Reduction”.
   • Image Quality can be set from 100% (original quality) to 10% (maximum compression but lower quality).
   • Size Reduction allows reducing file size from original to up to 50% smaller.
5. Optionally enter an email to send the compressed photos.
6. Finally, tap “Continue” to compress the photos with your chosen settings. This could take a moment or two.
7. Once processing completes, you have the option to “Delete Originals” if you only want the smaller versions or simply keep both.
8. Tap “Finish” and the compressed photos will be saved to your Photos app & cloud services connected.

Reduce the size of images and pictures

Very similar process:

1. Install app from the App Store and open
2. Tap “Select Photos to Compress”
3. Choose photos you want to compress
4. Tap “Next”
5. Adjust “Photo quality” and “Photo dimensions” sliders
6. Tap “Compress” to apply settings and reduce size
7. Compressed photos are saved in your Photos app & cloud

Camera App Settings

You can also change the default format for photos clicked by your iPhone camera:

1. Open Settings app
2. Scroll down and tap “Camera”
3. Now tap “Formats”
4. Change from “High Efficiency” (default) to “Most Compatible”.

This will save new photos at maximum quality in a standard JPEG format instead of the compressed HEIC format used normally. Photo sizes will be larger.

You can toggle this as needed if you want zero compression for some important photos vs normal photo compression enabled otherwise.

Email/Upload Size Reduction

Before attaching photos to emails or uploading them to social media/websites, you can resize them:

1. Go to your Photos Library and select a photo
2. Press the Share button.
3. Scroll down and select “Save Image”
4. Now set a lower resolution or dimensions like 1024×768 or similar.
5. This will save a second, smaller copy which you can then upload/email while retaining the original at full size in your Photos app.
